The Person of Christ and the Virgin Conception

For the next few days (up until Christmas) I’m going to post some thought-provoking and hopefully worship-provoking quotes from Donald Macleod’s book The Person of Christ.

Here’s  today’s, on the virgin conception (relating specifically to the sinlessness of Christ):

We need say no more than that the humanity of Christ was created by the Holy Spirit, rather than procreated by sexual intercourse, and that as such it partook of the essential character of all that God creates: it was very good….Christ is new. He is from outside. He is not a derivative from, or a branch of, Adam. He is parallel to the first man, a new departure, and as such not involved in the guilt which runs in the original stream….a sinless humanity is impossible without a miracle (40-41).
