A Second Tree

The promised Jew,

crushed and deserted; he

hangs,

bloody and defeated; he

dies,

in stages, beautifully,

like a leaf in autumnal change.

The color of his death

pours in the weakness

of droplets, sprinkled

over the skull-top’s earth,

like a farmer sows seeds.

And in the beauty of

his red-streaked splendor, he

screams,

declaring the finish; he

falls, or,

is plucked from his tree

on that hilltop garden.

The red-turning

change of that crucified promise,

is buried, then;

a seed meant to grow

the fruit of love

and authority,

who will reign above all.
